Politics: Mexico: Calderon wins by slimmest margin, election results contested by the Left

.
The legal winner of Mexico's presidential vote by a plurality (not a majority) is the conservative candidate of the National Action Party (PAN), the party of the preceding president, Vincente Fox. If confirmed by the deadline of September 6, PAN's Felipe Calderon will take office December 1 to serve for a single six-year term.

Update Jul 8,2k6: Calderon asks US, Canada help create Mexican jobs
Update Jul 9,2k6: Mass demo to reverse vote count, put Leftists in power

North America > Mexico

His opponent, with an excessively long name that I shall abbreviate to Lopez Obrador, lost conversely by the slimmest of margins (altho he did not come anywhere near a majority either, and is, after a recount, at best winner likewise of a plurality of 35+%, against the 35+% of Calderon (the official count separates them by only .06%). In the parliamentary elections the two leading parties are similarly close, but other parties will gain the remaining 30% of the seats. So the parliamentary politics of shifting alliances from issue to issue are expected.

Meantime, Lopez Obrador is claiming he lost the vote by fraud; and he's demanding a recount of every single ballot cast. To pressure the Federal Electoral Tribunal to that end LO has called his followers into the streets on tomorrow in order to intimdate the court. Meanwhile, Calderon is outlining his program, and called for a "unity government" including leaders of other political parties, and in the process has offered Lopez Obrador a cabinet post. Perhaps, Minister of Street Cleaning

For both the USA and Canada and the people of Mexico, the confirmation of Felipe Calderon is the best way out of underdevelopment and poverty. For the US, the problem of illegal immigration from Mexico remains the most immediate and difficult issue. One important strategy would be for the US and Canada, also, to encourage investment in the Mexican economy. This could help take off some of the pressure of massive illegal immigration over the borders by Mexicansw and others. But we shouldn't be surprised that to the degree a change occurs for the better in Mexico's economy, the more Mexico itself will be subjected to massive further illegal immigration from beyond its own southern border.

The countries to Mexico's south have the same demographics of h+ birthrates, little education, little economic infrastructure, little employment for each cohort of yourng men and women entering or desiring to enter the job market.
