On November 10, 1995, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others were executed for their non-violent campaign against the environmental and human rights abuses taking place in Ogoniland, in the Niger Delta.
Now on the sixteenth anniversary of Saro-Wiwa’s execution, the situation in the Niger Delta is even more dire. Oil spills, waste dumping and gas flaring are notorious and endemic. The resulting pollution has damaged the soil, water and air, contributing to violations of the right to health, the right to an adequate standard of living, including the rights to food and water, and the right to gain a living through work. Hundreds of thousands of people are affected, particularly the poorest and those that rely on traditional livelihoods such as fishing and agriculture.
On November 10, 2011 Amnesty International is releasing “The True ‘Tragedy’: Delays and failures in tackling oil spills in the Niger Delta”. The report focuses on two oil spills, which occurred in 2008 near Bodo, Ogoniland. Three years on, Shell has NOT cleaned up the pollution and the community continues to suffer. Sadly, the Bodo disaster is symptomatic of wider problems within the oil industry in Nigeria.
The UN Environment Programme has estimated a full clean up of Ogoniland will take 25-30 years, and have recommended $1 billion be put forward as an initial payment toward an independent clean up fund to cover the cost.
The exploitation and degradation of the Niger Delta by the oil industry must stop. It’s time Shell OWNS UP to the devastation they have caused to the Ogoni people and their land. They must PAY UP – contributing the initial $1 billion to an independent clean up fund – and FINALLY start the enormous CLEAN UP process to rehabilitate and restore the Niger Delta.
